Martin Cawston
Delaware House is proud to be the home for Martin Cawston, a champion dancer, teacher, and adjudicator of the ballroom tradition. Martin is originally from England, where he began dancing at the age of seven, and quickly gained status as a successful amateur then professional dancer. During his amateur career, Martin gained several championship titles and represented England in ten dance competitions throughout Europe. He was also a principal dancer in "Dancing Cheek to Cheek," at the Duke of York Theatre in London's West End.
Martin then moved to the professional circuit in 1989, and began what was to become a highly acclaimed and successful professional career. He was a British National Latin American Finalist at the Blackpool Dance Festival with partner Julie Tomkins in 1994, and the duo went on to dance in many engagements in England and abroad performing their Latin American show dance, coaching competitive dancers, and adjudicating championships. After Martin retired from professional competition, he and Julie continued to travel the world teaching, adjudicating and performing until 2000, when Martin accepted a teaching position in Milwaukee.
Despite Martin's impressive background and credentials, Martin would mention before anything else that he is a teacher. Martin is fully qualified with the I.S.T.D. (Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing) and the N.A.T.D. (National Association of Teachers of Dancing), and teaches both International and American styles of ballroom. Martin's teachings emphasize technique and skill, but anyone who has taken lessons with Martin knows that they are interspersed with a lot of humor and fun.
Martin teaches all levels and ages, from beginner to professional, and approaches each student uniquely in a manner that allows the student to learn at a level that matches his or her own ability. Martin regularly competes Pro/Am with his students, and they have placed in numerous US and world championship finals.
Martin is available for coaching, lectures, technique, and adjudicating in both International and American styles. To reach Martin, you may call him at (414) 807-6321.
